Pragnell Powers to Amateur Tour Triumph
In-form George Pragnell took an early lead at the top of the national rankings when he defeated Kayden Brierley 4-2 in the final to win the opening English Amateur Snooker Tour event of the 2022/23 season.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant start to the new campaign having reached the final of the first two Q Tour events in recent weeks. And now, the Norwich cueman has an EPSB title to his name after a brilliant performance at the Tradewell Snooker Club in Hull.
Pragnell denied 13-year-old Edward Jones 4-1 in the opening round before ousting current English under-21 champion Callum Beresford 4-3 in the last 32, and then eliminating recent professional Peter Devlin 4-0 in the last 16.
Returning for the last eight on Sunday, Pragnell ended the run of James McGouran 4-1 and then Daniel Wormersley by the same score in the semi-finals where he was aided by breaks of 73 and 55.
On the other side of the draw, Under-21 Premier Development Tour player Brierley had to take a longer route having been drawn in one of three preliminary round matches.
The 20-year-old reserved energy dropping just one frame in his first three matches before pipping Matthew Glasby 4-3 in the last 16 with a run of 87 in the deciding frame.
Next day, Brierley saw off former professionals Craig Butler and Steven Hallworth, both 4-2, in the last eight and four respectively. Against Hallworth, he registered runs of 76, 51 and 50.
Brierley held an early lead in the final after an effort of 50 helped him claim the opening frame, however, Pragnell – in his third final this month – was not to be stopped as he won four of the next five frames for the title and a £750 payday.
Devlin banks the high break prize for a 132 he made in the last 32 against Andy Milliard.
Event 2 is set to take place at The Winchester in Lecester on the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd October.
