100th English Amateur Championship Final to be held in Cheltenham

The English Amateur Championship – snooker’s longest running competition – will celebrate its 100th edition this season. In tribute to this historic milestone for the sport, it has been confirmed that the 2020 final will take place in the main arena of The Centaur at Cheltenham Racecourse during World Snooker’s World Grand Prix in February. 

Since 1916, this iconic event has been the jewel in the crown for amateur snooker in England. Excluding a period when World War II broke out, it has been held every year and won by future world professional champions and legends such as John Pulman, John Spencer, Stuart Bingham and Jimmy White. Such is the competitive nature of this prestigious tournament, many of snooker’s top stars have failed to get their name on the esteemed roll of honour. 

This season’s English Amateur Championship title decider will be held across two sessions on Saturday 8th February. A best-of-13 encounter, six frames will be played in the morning, with the conclusion to the match and destiny of the trophy discovered in the afternoon.

English Partnership for Snooker and Billiards board member Simon Berrisford is delighted about the upcoming spectacle. “The EPSB recognises what a special moment this is for the event and the sport in general. The English Amateur Championship has always been synonymous with snooker, but the winner of this year’s event will forever go down in history as the 100th winner” said Simon. 

“We are all determined to put on a memorable show for the occasion; holding it at such a venue in the middle of a major professional event will give us the platform to achieve that.”

The championship is held over different phases, with several regional qualifying heats breaking the action off on Sunday 1st December.
