Jake Robinson Wins Maiden English Amateur Tour Title in Leeds

Home » Jake Robinson Wins Maiden English Amateur Tour Title in Leeds

Jake Robinson defeated Lee Shanker 4-2 in the final at the Northern Snooker Centre to win his first English Amateur Tour title.

Robinson stormed into the final day in Leeds with victories over Andy Battams, Damian Wilks and Halim Hussain. Further defeats of Daniel Womersley and Matthew Glasby on the Sunday then set up a final meeting with Shanker.

The race to qualify for the European Championships in March was one of the big talking points heading into the weekend and Shanker had put himself in contention of a nomination with a run to the final that included an impressive 4-3 win against Craig Steadman in the last eight.

Victory in the best-of-seven frame final would have given Shanker the final qualification spot in place of Womersley, who his opponent Robinson had beaten at the quarter-final stage.

Robinson, himself unable to qualify, already had experience of denying his opponents a place in Bosnia & Herzegovina, having overcome Glasby in a semi-final decider. Had Glasby won that match, he would have earned a nomination for the European Championships.

This proved to be the case once again in a tense final at the Northern Snooker Centre. A break of 58 helped the 25-year-old into a 3-0 lead but Shanker hit back with back-to-back frames to reduce the deficit to just one at 3-2.

However, Robinson held himself together to take the closely-fought sixth frame and secure his first ever title on the English Amateur Tour.

The result means that Steadman, Ryan Davies, Peter Lines and Womersley will join English Amateur champion Paul Deaville as the nominees to represent England at the European Championships, with top ranked player Steven Hallworth having already confirmed that he will be unable to attend due to personal commitments.

The event concludes the 2023/24 English Amateur Tour season – information on the new season will be released in due course. Learn more about the English Amateur Tour.
