Nicholas Ayers Lifts English Under-14 Crown in Tamworth
Nicholas Ayers defeated William Thomson 4-0 at the Tamworth Sports Bar to win the Powerglide English Under-14 Championship.
Ayers made amends for the disappointment of twelve months ago, where he was beaten 4-0 in the final by Shaun Liu, by overcoming 11-year-old Thomson in dominant fashion in this year’s title match.
The victory sees Ayers join a prestigious roll of honour which has featured 2023 English Amateur champion Paul Deaville and current professional Stan Moody in recent years.
A record-breaking tally of 173 players took part in the 2024 Powerglide English Under-14 Championship, with many engaging in a competitive event for the very first time.
The event was split into three stages, starting with regional club qualifiers to narrow the field to 39 competitors before Stage Two competitions in March set up the final between Ayers and Thomson.
The 13-year-old eventual champion had looked confident from the start of the championship, coming through the five matches in his initial stage one qualifier at Club 147 in Leicester without dropping a single frame.
This form continued in the Stage Two North event at Q Bar in Walsall Wood, as Ayers made it to the semi-final with his whitewash victory streak intact.
In the Stage Two semi-final, Ayers met 13-year-old James Bradley, who would be the first and ultimately only player to take a frame off the eventual winner as Ayers came through a 2-1 victor before whitewashing Jacob Corbett to reach the championship final.
Thomson would be his opponent in the final in Tamworth. The 11-year-old cueist had qualified through the regional event at Chandlers Ford Snooker Club in Eastleigh before storming through the Stage Two South event with the loss of just a single frame – beating ten-year-old Rayan El Qmache to set up a meeting with Ayers.
In the final, Ayers would ultimately prove too strong for his younger opponent as he stormed into a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven frame contest before getting over the line in the fourth on the final black to secure the title.
