Barry Pinches defeated Simon Bedford 4-0 in the final of the season’s second English Amateur Tour event at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds.

The former ranking event quarter-finalist came through a strong field of 89 players to pick up a title on England’s flagship amateur tour for the first time.

Pinches began the two-day event with a 4-1 victory over English Under-18 champion Daniel Boyes, who had won his maiden English Junior Tour title on the previous weekend, and followed this up with impressive whitewash wins against Hayden Staniland and Patrick Whelan to book his place in the final day.

After losing the opening frame on Sunday morning, a duo of 73 breaks helped Pinches to a 4-1 defeat of Matthew Glasby in the last 16.

Seven former professionals featured in the quarter-finals stage and the 54-year-old Pinches had to overcome three of them to earn the title in West Yorkshire.

His quarter-final opponent was James Cahill, who famously beat Ronnie O’Sullivan at the Crucible Theatre in 2019, and Pinches was able to take the last two frames of the contest to come away a 4-2 victor before defeating Kuldesh Johal 4-1 to reach the title match.

Fellow former professional Bedford had reached the final with back-to-back final frame decider victories against Steven Hallworth and Peter Lines but was unable to get going against Pinches as the player from Norwich rounded off an impressive weekend with a 4-0 win to secure the title at the Northern Snooker Centre.

The third English Amateur Tour event of the season takes place on 16-17 November at Club 200 in Manchester. Enter now.
