Super Sykes Wins in Widnes

Oliver Sykes defeated Ethan Llewellyn 3-1 in the final of the third English Junior Tour event of the season at the Mill Brow Snooker Club in Widnes.

Success for Sykes in the North West saw him pick up his second English Junior Tour title of the season and he has now won six of the last eight events on the tour.

The two-day event began with 46 cueists battling it out on the Saturday for 12 places in the final day, where they would join the eight seeded players for the final stages.

Eventual finalist Llewellyn featured in the opening day and gave a flawless performance as he defeated Oliver Li, Toby Smith and Arthur Champion-Davies without dropping a frame.

A break of 108 from 18-year-old Westley Cooper was the highest break on Saturday, but this was topped by event two winner Daniel Boyes as he compiled a stunning visit of 126 in his match against Jack Wilding.

Boyes had stunned the dominant Sykes en route to victory in the last English Junior Tour event, but was unable to repeat the feat as he fell in the second group stage.

Sykes dropped just three frames at this stage as he advanced to the quarter-finals as group winner before defeating former English Under-14 champion Shaun Liu and reigning European and English Under-16 champion Vladislav Gradinari to book his place in the final.

There he would face Llewellyn, who had overcome Aidan Murphy and Cooper to reach the final and he took the opener of the best-of-five frame title match with a break of 61.

Unphased by falling behind, Sykes registered his highest break of the weekend – a 114, to draw level and then completed another successful weekend on the English Junior Tour with breaks of 42 and 43 in the next two frames to secure the victory.

The fourth event of the English Junior Tour takes place on 23-24 November at Woodside Snooker Centre in Dereham. Enter now.
